Dark Room Gallery: Portrait Exhibit

I took this photograph on a warm summer afternoon in Brooklyn. Melanie and Nick had an extended stay in the city due to volcanic ash over Iceland, which had disrupted their travel plans. They were patient enough to let me photograph to my heart's content.
I like this photograph because baby Katie was happy and relaxed enough to look straight over and lock eyes with me, just behind the camera. She was at that mysterious age when personality begins.
Photo by Lonnie Duckman. Used with kind permission by Leroy Skalstad.
Many thanks to juror Graham Gordon Ramsey and the team at Dark Room Gallery for selecting this piece for inclusion in the Interactive Portraits Exhibition (August 9th—September 3rd). I didn't have a chance to attend the opening but I'm honored to have my work exhibited alongside the images of so many talented photographers.

My oracle of all things current @thegiftd sent me a link to the awesome blog My Mom the Style Icon a while back. It mashes vintage photos with sparkling commentary by the peerless Piper Weiss (excellent name, Piper–it’s short, cute and trills off the tongue). Lo and behold, Piper asked if she could interview me and submit Mum’s photos to New York Magazine Weddings for publication. Um, yes!
Project 365: A Photograph Every Day

I'm taking part in Project 365. I'll be taking a photograph a day for a year, hopefully picking up some interesting images along the way and creating a visual record of incidental moments in life. Learning a lot about my old point-and-shoot camera.
